Queensland does not issue a licence called damp proofing. The class that covers it is waterproofing, issued by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission, and the QBCC describes its scope as permitting the holder to “apply, install and repair waterproofing, including surface preparation, and apply or install material or systems for preventing moisture penetration”.
Injecting a chemical damp course into a wall to stop moisture rising through it sits inside that description. So does tanking a wall below ground. If somebody tells you they are a licensed damp proofer, the useful follow-up is which class they hold.
The register shows the name, the number, the class, the status and any conditions or disciplinary history on record. It does not show everything — insolvencies and civil proceedings are not published there — so it confirms the licence is real, not that the business is a good one.
Building work valued under $3,300 can be carried out as incidental work outside the licence, provided it does not touch a regulated occupational trade such as plumbing, drainage, pest control or fire protection. A damp course injected through a whole wall is rarely that small. If a quote comes in just under it with no licence offered, ask what the scope actually covers.
It will not tell you the diagnosis is right. The costliest mistake in this trade is not an unlicensed installer. It is a correctly licensed one injecting a damp course into a wall whose real problem was a leaking downpipe, a blocked subfloor, or a garden bed stacked above the floor level.
That wall will be wet again in a year, the paperwork will be perfect, and nobody will have done anything wrong. Ask what was measured, at what heights, and what else was ruled out. Ask that first. Ask for the licence number second.
